About the Meningitis Trust
The Meningitis Trust works to ensure all communities are aware of the impact of meningitis and anyone affected has access to quality care and support for as long as they need it.The Trust is the UK’s longest established meningitis charity. We began in 1986 after parents in Stroud, Gloucestershire, formed a support group following an outbreak of meningitis in the area. Today the Trust covers the whole of the UK, with a network of community development officers and nurses, enabling us to offer information and support to individuals and organisations on a local level.
Meningitis can strike in an instant but its impact can last a lifetime. As many as 500,000 people living in the UK today have had either viral or bacterial meningitis at some time in their lives. In addition up to 10 million adults in the UK – one adult in every four – knows of someone who has had the disease and may have been impacted.
Most people survive meningitis but thousands are left with debilitating after-effects including deafness, blindness, limb loss, learning difficulties, memory issues and behavioural problems. The impact may also cause relationship difficulties and an enforced change of lifestyle.
Our unique range of professional services and community support services help people rebuild their lives following meningitis.
